The 2024 ERC report, entitled 'Transformative Change for a Sustainable Future', features Curiae Virides as an example of how frontier research contributes to a just green transition. The project is mentioned in Chapter 3 of the report on A just green transition. Curiae Virides explores how transnational ecological conflicts, often involving global value chains, are increasingly being transformed into litigation, and more importantly, what are the outcomes (remedies) obtained by the actors who trigger courts.
The project's core hypothesis is that ecocentric case law – even when not focused on individual remedies – can influence the behaviour of powerful actors in ecological governance. This is consistent with a broader trend identified in the ERC report, which highlights the instrumental use of legal systems to address governance gaps where political or regulatory action is lacking. The findings of this study will be of relevance not only to scholars and legal practitioners, but also to policymakers because they are responsible for designing legal tools to enforce environmental standards, corporate due diligence, and climate accountability.
